corals may have illuminated seas 540m years ago

yes, there were soft-bodied animals
long before life exploded into plentitude,
some were thought to have eyes
at least an ability to sense light,
– even if not yet an ability to see –
but scientists have no evidence of them.
you see, the eye is not a bone
that one might find in a fossil bed.
and yet, imagine that creature, stuck
in place, non-seeing itself, starting it all:
to glow down in the dark of the sea!
to distract or confuse, to hide or attract,
or simply to be different: a living light.
