The Scarecrow’s Sacrifice

Heavy-lidded eyes
Smile sewn on
Skin bled dry
Shoulders dead weight
The planet turns and skies fall
I hold a torch high over rotted fruit
Laborer on a dead field
Sun and wind weather my soul
Fingers slip, one by one
I allow the flame to fall
So that the fields may burn
So that the trees may grow again
