Water Tower

“…For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.”
—Wendell Berry, “The Peace of Wild Things”

the crow lands for a time

wings folded worn talons clutching the rusted lip of the tower depri-

ved of branches she builds her nest with plastic and litter from the rest

stop exit feeding her chicks scraps of carrion rotting on the shoulders of in-

terstates this is her life in the city power lines and parking lots packed dumpsters and the

off-ramps of highways crude substitutes of the grace-

ful woods and cliffs of the world

that have been beaten and broken and

are gone rest now for a while am-

ong the cruel steel for even these worst perches are seldom ever free

Adam Willis is a poet and artist from Delaware County, OH. Adam uses his work as an outlet for expressing his feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, and displeasure with the current state of the environment and American culture. In this regard, the tones and themes of his work are often negative; however—for his sake—the creative process is therapeutic.
